Born in 1962 in Algiers, Beihdja Rahal was nourished with Arab-Andalusian music by her family and close friends. She studied with some of the Algerian masters of the time. At 30 years old, she settled in France but continued to practise the ancient san’a tradition with her lush voice and intricate playing of the kwitra ‘oud. Rahal has established herself as one of the outstanding voices of North Africa.
At the prestigious Maison des Cultures du Monde, the gracious singer performed her traditional repertoire, accompanied by a mixed ensemble of fellow instrumentalists.
